DAY 6 – Healthy Eating Myth & Truth

MYTH: If it says “Natural” it’s Healthy

TRUTH: Just because a food label says “Natural” does not necessarily mean it’s actually healthy. It’s a way for food companies to make money by convincing you to buy their product . Recently, the FDA was asked to explore the use of the term “Natural” on food labels. The FDA has considered the term “natural” to mean: “nothing artificial or synthetic has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in that food” What that means is that food production methods, such as the use of pesticides, or adding high fructose corn syrup are still acceptable for labelling a food as “natural”. The FDA also did not consider whether the term “natural” should describe any nutritional or other health benefit. Whoa! So it is up to us as consumers to read the ingredients and labels. Check the ingredients, look out for words you don’t know and more than 5 ingredients. When buying meat and poultry make sure you are looking for grass-fed, no hormones, and for fish wild-caught.

Something to Think About

Wow. This quote gives me so much peace of mind! Sometimes we can feel like it is all up to us, and that if we don’t succeed then we have failed. This quote encourages us that it is not our job to succeed, or even to determine what success is, but rather it is to show up and do everything that we can. We can only offer our human abilities, but when we offer those abilities to God, He can transform them into miraculous works that will bring glory to His name. Isn’t that an amazing thing to be a part of?
