10 Reasons To Get Out Walking + Walking Challenge

10 Reasons To Get Out Walking + Walking Challenge

June 30, 2026

Let's be honest, walking doesn't exactly have the best reputation in the fitness world. No one's bragging that they "crushed a 20-minute walk" the way they might after a HIIT or total-body workout.

But here's the funny thing: walking might be one of the best things you can do for your health. I do want to add that, to experience the full benefits listed below, you need to challenge yourself a bit. As you walk, pay attention—you should feel your heart rate and breathing increase. A leisurely walk is still good for you, but when you pick up the pace and walk with purpose, your body will thank you even more!

It's easy to dismiss because it's something we've been doing since we were toddlers. It feels too simple to make much of a difference. But that's exactly why so many people overlook it. The truth is, your body loves to walk. And when you make it a regular habit, some pretty amazing things start to happen.

So before you write it off as "just a walk," here are 10 surprising benefits that might have you reaching for your walking shoes today.

1. It Can Instantly Boost Your Mood

Ever notice how a walk can completely change your outlook? Even a 10-20 minute walk can increase the release of feel-good chemicals like endorphins while helping lower stress hormones. It's one of the quickest ways to shake off a bad mood, reduce anxiety, and come back feeling like yourself again.

2. It's Incredible for Your Heart

Your heart doesn't necessarily need an all-out sprint. It simply needs consistent movement. Walking gets your heart pumping without placing excessive stress on your joints.

Regular walks can help:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improve circulation
  • Reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Improve cholesterol levels

3. It Helps Balance Blood Sugar

This one surprises a lot of people. A short walk after meals helps your muscles use glucose for energy, which can reduce blood sugar spikes. That's one reason many health professionals encourage walking for just 10-15 minutes after eating. Think of walking as giving your body a helping hand after lunch or dinner.

4. It Clears Mental Clutter

When you're stuck on a problem, feeling overwhelmed, or can't seem to focus... Go for a walk!

Movement increases blood flow to the brain, and the change of scenery often helps organize scattered thoughts. Many people find their best ideas come while walking—not while staring at a screen.

5. It Strengthens More Than Just Your Legs

Walking works far more muscles than most people realize.

Your:

  • Glutes
  • Hamstrings
  • Calves
  • Core
  • Hip muscles
  • Ankles

...are all working together every step you take.

6. It Supports Better Sleep

If you're tossing and turning at night, a daily walk may help. Regular physical activity helps regulate your body's internal clock and can make it easier to fall asleep and stay asleep. Bonus points if you walk outside in the morning because the natural sunlight also helps regulate your sleep cycle!

7. It Improves Balance as You Age

Balance isn't something we suddenly lose one day. It's something we maintain (or neglect) over time. Walking strengthens the muscles that keep you stable and helps improve coordination, making everyday activities easier and reducing fall risk as you get older.

8. It Gives Your Brain a Workout Too

Walking doesn't just benefit your body. Research has linked regular walking with improved memory, sharper thinking, better concentration, and a lower risk of cognitive decline later in life. It's exercise for your brain and your body.

9. It's One of the Best Stress Relievers

Whether you're walking through your neighborhood, on a trail, or simply around the block, those few minutes away from constant notifications and the noise of life can calm your nervous system and help you breathe a little easier.

10. It Can Become a Sacred Time with God

This, in my opinion, is the best benefit. Walking doesn't have to be "just exercise." It can become time to pray, worship, reflect on Scripture, or simply enjoy God's creation without distractions.

While there is no definitive biblical record, biblical historians and scholars generally estimate that Jesus walked about 15 to 20 miles per day while traveling throughout His ministry. Walking was simply part of everyday life—and many meaningful conversations, miracles, and moments of discipleship happened along the road.

Maybe there's something beautiful about slowing down enough to meet God in the ordinary.
