John 8:36 — "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

During yesterday's live teaching, I talked about how important it is to forgive yourself. And I know from personal experience that sometimes it's much easier to extend grace to someone else than to give it to ourselves.

We can replay decisions we regret, conversations we wish we'd handled differently, or seasons of life we'd love to go back and redo.

And sometimes, no matter how many years have passed, those memories still bring up the same feelings of guilt and shame.

But here's something I want you to think about: If God has forgiven you, why do you feel like you need to keep punishing yourself?

I know that's a tough question. I've had to ask myself the same thing.

Sometimes we think that holding on to guilt proves we're truly sorry for what happened. Almost as if letting go would mean we're excusing our behavior or pretending it didn't matter.

But that's not what forgiveness means.

Forgiving yourself doesn't mean minimizing your mistakes or ignoring their consequences. It means accepting that what Jesus did on the cross is enough—even for the things you struggle to forgive yourself for.

Think about that for a moment.

Jesus didn't go to the cross because we were perfect. He went because we weren't. He knew we would make mistakes, fall short, and need His grace.

And yet, sometimes we continue holding ourselves accountable for things we've already confessed and brought before God, as though our shame somehow adds something to what Jesus has already done.

It doesn't.

Now, I don't want to make this sound easier than it is. Forgiving yourself isn't always a one-time decision. You may feel at peace about something one day, only to have those same feelings come rushing back the next.

But just because the feelings return doesn't mean God's forgiveness has disappeared.

When those thoughts come back, you have a choice. You can continue replaying what happened and criticizing yourself, or you can remind yourself of what God says is true.

You might say:

"Yes, I wish I had handled that differently. I've acknowledged what I did, I've asked God to forgive me, and I'm learning from it. But I'm not going to let that mistake define who I am."

The more we practice turning to God's truth instead of our shame, the more we can begin to experience the freedom Jesus offers.

And that freedom isn't about pretending our past never happened. It's about no longer allowing it to determine how we see ourselves or how we live today.

You are not defined by your worst decision, your biggest regret, or someone else's opinion of you. Your identity is found in Jesus Christ.

I love the promise in John 8:36: "If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

Jesus offers us something we could never earn on our own. We can receive His forgiveness, learn from our mistakes, and move forward knowing that we are deeply loved.

Life won't suddenly become perfect, and there may still be things from your past that take time to work through. But you don't have to let shame keep you from experiencing the joy, peace, and purpose God has for you today.

Something to Think About

Is there something from your past that you keep holding against yourself, even though you've asked God to forgive you?

Why do you think it's been so difficult to let go?

Today, I want to encourage you to talk honestly with God about it. Thank Him for His forgiveness and ask Him to help you accept the grace you've already been given.

You can't change what happened yesterday, but you can stop allowing it to steal the joy and freedom God wants you to experience today.
