I think one of the deepest parts of emotional eating is that it reveals our longing for comfort.

As I talked about in the video, when life feels stressful, lonely, painful, or exhausting, or when you’re carrying something from a past experience, it’s natural to want relief. You want something to lift the heaviness. You want to feel better quickly.

Food can feel like an easy place to go because it is right there. It doesn’t ask questions. It doesn’t require vulnerability. It gives us a momentary escape.

But food cannot heal the places in us that are hurting.

It can distract us, but it cannot restore us. It can fill our stomachs, but it cannot give peace to our souls.

And sometimes, without even realizing it, we start bringing our deepest emotions to the pantry before we bring them to God.

Instead of telling Him we are exhausted, we eat ice cream.
Instead of admitting we feel lonely, we snack.
Instead of sitting with Him in the disappointment, we reach for something that will help us avoid it.

God isn’t mad at you when you do this, but I think He is sad for you. He so wants you to come to Him with all that you are dealing with. He knows food will never bring you the comfort you long for. I can almost picture Him standing there with His arms wide open, saying, “Come to me when you are weary and burdened. I can give you rest and comfort. Please don’t turn to the food. I am here for you.”

Think about this: if you are someone who believes in what Jesus did for you, you actually have the best source of comfort right inside of you. “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper (advocate, comforter, counselor, Spirit of Truth) will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”

How awesome it is that our Comforter is with you always, ready to help you through tough times, ready to speak Truth to you. All you need to do is ask Him for help, and He is there.

In fact, Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” This verse is another reminder: He is not far away from your stress, your cravings, your exhaustion, or your pain. He is close.

He cares about what is happening under the surface. He cares about the conversation that hurt you. The loneliness you don’t talk about. The pressure you feel. The old wound that still stings. The anxiety that shows up at night. He cares about YOU.

Emotional eating may be pointing to places in your heart that are asking to be brought into the light of God’s love. The amazing thing about God is that He doesn’t need you to clean up your act before He’s willing to help. He just wants you to open your heart honestly with Him.

I know how good it makes me feel when one of my kids comes to me with an issue they are dealing with. No matter what they share, I am just so glad they felt they could trust me and that they believed I could help.

Our heavenly Father is like that, waiting for you to come to Him and share all that you are feeling.

So today, instead of hiding from Him, try turning toward Him. Only God can meet you in those deeper places. He doesn’t just offer temporary relief. He brings real comfort, lasting peace, and the kind of care your heart is actually looking for.

You can simply pray, “God, I don’t even know exactly what I’m feeling, but I know I need You more than I need food right now.”

That is a beautiful place to begin.

Supporting Verses:

Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; He rescues those whose spirits are crushed.”

John 14:26: “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

2 Corinthians 1:3-4: “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort. He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.”

Journal Questions:

  1. Today, talk with God about what is going on in your heart and then listen for His voice. Does this bring you comfort?
  2. Think back on the times you can remember turning to food for comfort. How did you feel after eating? How do you think God could have comforted you in a deeper way if you had turned to Him?
