Shame Makes Us Want to Hide
Genesis 3:10 — "I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."
Shame has been part of the human story from the very beginning. And while it shows up differently for each of us, one of the most common ways we deal with it is by hiding.
Sometimes we hide behind a busy schedule, a smile, or a quick "I'm fine" when someone asks how we're doing. Other times, we keep our struggles, mistakes, or regrets to ourselves because we're afraid of what people might think if they really knew what was going on.
I think we can all relate to that in some way.
That's exactly what happened in the Garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they suddenly became aware of their nakedness and felt afraid. Instead of enjoying the closeness they once had with God, they covered themselves and hid.
Think about that. Their shame caused them to hide from the very One who loved them most.
And isn't that what we sometimes do, too?
When we make a mistake, feel disappointed in ourselves, or carry something from our past that we're ashamed of, we can pull away from God instead of turning toward Him.
But I love what happens next in Genesis.
God calls out to Adam, "Where are you?"
It wasn't because God didn't know where Adam was. It was an invitation to come out of hiding and face what had happened.
And even though there were consequences for their disobedience, God didn't abandon Adam and Eve. He cared for them, even making clothing to cover their nakedness.
What a beautiful reminder that our mistakes don't put us beyond God's love and care.
Maybe you've been carrying something that you haven't wanted to face. Perhaps it's a decision you regret, something you're struggling with right now, or even something that happened to you that was never your fault.
Whatever it is, you don't have to keep hiding it from God. He already knows, and He wants you to come to Him with it.
Jesus gives us this beautiful invitation in Matthew 11:28:
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
I want to encourage you to do something today.
Instead of quickly reading this message and moving on to the next thing, find a few quiet minutes to be alone with God.
Ask yourself, "Is there something I've been carrying that I haven't been willing to bring to God?"
Then talk to Him about it. Be honest about what happened, how you're feeling, and what you're afraid of. You don't need to find the perfect way to say it. Just start talking to Him.
You may not feel completely free from shame after one conversation with God, but every time you choose honesty over hiding, you're taking a meaningful step toward healing.
And remember, you never have to earn your way back into God's love. He is ready to meet you right where you are.
