I think it's really important to understand the difference between guilt and shame. They can feel similar, but they lead us in very different directions.

Guilt says, "I did something wrong."

Shame says, "There is something wrong with me."

That's a pretty big difference!

Guilt can actually be a good thing. When we've said or done something that goes against what we know is right, that uncomfortable feeling can prompt us to stop, reflect, and make things right.

As Christians, we have the Holy Spirit living within us, helping us recognize when our thoughts or actions aren't lining up with God's truth. This is called conviction, and it's one of the ways God lovingly guides us.

I love knowing that when I mess up, I don't have to hide from God or wonder if He's given up on me. I can go straight to Him, admit what I've done, ask for forgiveness, and trust Him to help me make better choices moving forward.

God's conviction points us toward change. Shame tries to convince us that change isn't possible.

Shame takes something we've done and turns it into a statement about who we are.

Instead of thinking, "I made a mistake," we begin believing, "I'm a failure."

Instead of, "I made a poor choice," we tell ourselves, "I'll never get this right."

And when we keep repeating those thoughts, they can begin shaping how we see ourselves, how we approach challenges, and even what we believe we deserve.

But here's what I want you to remember: You can take responsibility for something you've done without allowing it to define who you are.

Throughout this month, we'll talk more about how shame affects our identity and how God's truth can help us develop a healthier, more accurate view of ourselves.

My hope is that you'll reach a place where you can honestly say, "I wish I hadn't done that. I want to learn from it and make things right, but I can still love myself because I know God loves me."

So, the next time you feel guilty about something, pay attention to where those feelings are leading you.

Are they encouraging you to acknowledge what happened, seek forgiveness, and make a positive change? Or are they pulling you into thoughts that leave you feeling worthless, hopeless, or stuck?

God doesn't want us to ignore our mistakes, but He doesn't want us to be defined by them either.

We can admit when we're wrong, receive His forgiveness, learn from our experiences, and keep growing.

And that's a much healthier way to live!

Something to Think About

Think about a recent situation where you felt guilty or disappointed in yourself. Did you focus on what you did, or did you begin making negative statements about who you are?

What would it look like to take responsibility for your actions while also extending yourself the same grace God offers you?
