“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28

I've learned something over the years that hasn't always come naturally to me: Rest isn't a sign of weakness. It's a sign of wisdom.

For a long time, I thought slowing down meant I wasn't doing enough. There was always another email to answer, another project to finish, or something around the house that needed my attention.

Maybe you can relate!

It's easy to get caught up in the idea that being productive means we're doing well, and slowing down means we're falling behind.

But here's something I find interesting. God built rest into creation from the very beginning.

In Genesis, we're told that God rested on the seventh day. Not because He was exhausted or needed to recover, but because rest was part of His design.

If God considered rest important enough to build into the rhythm of creation, why do we sometimes treat it like something we should feel guilty about?

And this is where shame can sneak in.

Maybe you've finally sat down to relax, but instead of enjoying the moment, your mind starts running through everything you haven't finished.

You should be doing something productive.

You're already behind.

You haven't done enough to deserve a break.

Sound familiar?

Shame can convince us that rest is something we have to earn rather than something God invites us to receive.

But look at what Jesus says in Matthew 11:28.

He doesn't say, "Come to Me once you've finished everything on your list."

He doesn't say, "Come to Me when you've worked hard enough to deserve a break."

He simply says, "Come to Me."

I love that invitation because Jesus isn't asking us to prove ourselves. He's inviting us to bring our weariness, our worries, and the pressures we're carrying to Him.

And I think it's important to remember that rest isn't just about stopping physical activity. Sometimes our bodies are sitting still while our minds are working overtime!

We can take a break from our responsibilities and still be mentally exhausted because we're worrying, criticizing ourselves, or thinking about everything we need to do next.

True rest includes giving our minds and hearts permission to stop striving.

Sometimes that means spending quiet time with God, praying, or reading Scripture. Other times, it might mean taking a walk, sitting outside with a cup of coffee, listening to worship music, or simply putting your phone away and enjoying the people around you.

It doesn't have to be complicated.

I've noticed that when I make time to rest, I'm usually more patient, my thoughts are clearer, and I have more energy for the things that matter.

And I've also learned that sometimes the most important thing I can do is step away from my to-do list and remind myself that everything doesn't depend on me.

There's something freeing about that, isn't there?

We can work hard, care deeply about our responsibilities, and still trust God enough to take a break.

Of course, there are seasons of life when finding time to rest is especially challenging. Maybe you're caring for someone, juggling work and family, or walking through a difficult situation.

But even in those seasons, small moments of rest can make a difference.

And here's what I really want you to remember today:

Your worth isn't measured by how much you accomplish, and you don't have to exhaust yourself to prove you're doing enough.

God loves you when you're working hard, and He loves you just as much when you're resting.

So today, I want to encourage you to make room for a little rest without feeling guilty about it.

The to-do list may still be there when you're finished, and that's okay.

Something to Think About

Do you ever feel guilty when you're resting because you think you should be doing something more productive?

What thoughts or expectations make it difficult for you to slow down?

Today, choose one simple way to rest, even if it's just for 10 minutes. Put aside your distractions, spend some time with God, and give yourself permission to enjoy the break.

And while you're resting, ask yourself:

Am I trusting God with my responsibilities, or am I living as though everything depends on me?

Remember, rest isn't a reward for getting everything done. It's part of how God designed us to live.
